Is Beamly’s tool a diagnostic tool?
SmartAssessment™ informs practice and referral discussions. It does not diagnose medical conditions or replace a clinical evaluation. SmartAssessment™ was co-developed with clinical psychologists and is grounded in evidence-informed practice. For children ages 0–7, its purpose is to give educators and primary-care teams structured, accessible insight into a child's developmental progress—insights that can be used to personalize learning and support in classrooms, and to guide first-line conversations with families, including when referral to a specialist (e.g., developmental pediatrician) may be appropriate. Any future clinical validation, if pursued, would be scoped to specific workflows and would not change today's intended use.
What ages are covered by SmartAssessment™?
SmartAssessment™ covers children from 0 to 72 months old (ages 0–7).
Isn't this just a checklist?
No. Unlike a checklist, which is binary and only asks whether a child can do something or not, SmartAssessment™ looks at development more deeply and meaningfully. Instead of simply asking, “Can the child share?” and recording a yes or no answer, it examines how the child shares—whether willingly or reluctantly, with or without prompting, in what contexts, and whether this differs with peers versus adults. It also considers how these behaviors may have changed over time. Through this process, teachers are able to synthesize weeks of observation into structured evidence across seven developmental domains, along with specific next steps. That is what makes it a true assessment, rather than simple checklist-ticking.
Don't we already do observations?
Absolutely—and that is exactly the point. Your teachers already know their students deeply; the real challenge is documenting that knowledge in a consistent and usable way. In many settings, this process can take two to three hours per child, vary from one teacher to another, and make it difficult to track progress over time. SmartAssessment™ addresses that by structuring what teachers already know into consistent reports across seven developmental domains, complete with next steps, in just 20 minutes. It is not about asking teachers to do more observation. It is about helping them organize and translate the observation they already do into clearer, more actionable developmental insight.
